7 Picture Books To Read With Your Loved Ones (Book Reviews)

Even as a teenager, I still love picture books. While they are often directed towards younger children, picture books can be for everybody. I’ve put together this list, all of which are loved by me and my family.

The King Who Rained by Fred Gwynne

This clever books shows how a young child sees things differently how her parents intend. From raining kings, to blue prince (prints); this books is very entertaining.

The Five Chinese Brothers by Claire Huchet Bishop and Kurt Wiese

One of the five brothers finds himself wanted by the town for punishment, so each identical brother fills in to defeat the consequences with their unique abilities. This is my favorite picture book. While the plot is very bizarre, the book is well executed.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst and Ray Cruz

Alexander is having the worst (terrible, horrible, no good, very bad) day from the second he wakes up. Some days are just like that. The illustrations book are spectacular.

Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann

Gloria, Officer Buckle’s police dog assistant, tags along for his school safety speech. For once, the kids are engaged, clapping and cheering! Gloria will be a new favorite, and Officer Buckle’s most crucial buddy.

Boing! by Sean Taylor and illustrated by Bruce Ingman

Good for a laugh, and excellent to read aloud. The Great Elastic Marvel, five times World Trampolining Champion (sometimes known as the Man with Rubber Legs, the Jumping Master) has many strokes of luck when jumping from thing to thing in the city; until his luck runs out.

When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry . . . by Molly Bang
Sophie, as many kids do, gets really, really angry. So, she runs and runs and runs. Followed by two more books, When Sophie’s Feelings Are Really, Really Hurt; and When Sophie Thinks She Can’t . . .

Zen Shorts by Jon J Muth

Of course Addy, Michael, and Karl are intrigued when a giant panda moves into their neighborhood! Each of the kids spend time with Stillwater, learning valuable lessons from his story telling.

One of my favorites is The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas. I love how the story flips a classic on its head to make a new world perspective. Also, Helen Oxenbury is my favorite illustrator.
