Fans of Red, White, and Royal Blue Will Love Casey Mcquiston’s Newest Hit: I Kissed Shara Wheeler (Book Review)

Casey Mcquiston, beloved author of Red, White, and Royal Blue, recently published their third book: I Kissed Shara Wheeler. Instantly popular, The New York Times gave a glowing review. “I Kissed Shara Wheeler is an unfettered joy to read. It’s a love story starring two brilliant, ruthless queer girls who fight for what they want, and woe to any unjust authorities that stand in their way. McQuiston’s stories emphasize the power of queer community, and here a found family coalesces like the plans for an exquisite heist.”

Chloe Green has been kissed by Shara Wheeler, but she’s not the only one. Determined to be better than Shara, Chloe is met only with Shara’s sheer perfectness. With her father as the principle of their religious high school, Shara is instantly adored by classmates and teachers alike. On the other hand, Chloe was raised in California by her two moms, and has struggled to find peace with her new life in Alabama. When Shara disappears during prom, Chloe and her peers, Smith and Rory, follow clues left in pink envelopes to find her. With the events unfolding around her, Chloe finds herself being trapped in a seemingly endless cycle of thinking about Shara, looking for Shara, and hating Shara. Trying to find what is important, Chloe looks into all that has been overlooked; which includes a few secrets Shara has been hiding.

I enjoyed I Kissed Shara Wheeler greatly. One aspect I found particularly marvelous was the representation of trans and nonbinary youth. Despite their unaccepting high school, several peers of Chloe were genderqueer. Even in a small Alabama town, there are kids finding joy in the fluidness of gender.

Casey lives in New York City with their dog, Pepper. Wishing they could have had queer romances to read growing up in Louisiana, she writes what could have made her feel more seen.

I Kissed Shara Wheeler is the perfect fast-paced, YA queer romance for effortless reading late into the night. A romance filled with twists and turns, this quote is sure to hook you:

“There was this one weekend, a million summers ago, when I sat on the shore drinking a frozen limeade, and I realized the only thing I wanted to look at was the way the sun hit the girls swimming in the lake.
The problem has always been this: When I look at you, I taste lime, and I see light on water.”
