On a recent visit to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, I managed to complete four books during the six day trip. I brought my Kindle for light-weight reading, and set up my hammock. As follows are short reviews for each of the books I indulged in.
Obie Is Man Enough by Schuyler Bailar
While he is accepted by most, Obie’s swim coach refuses to welcome his transition onto the swim team. From transitioning his gender expression, to switching swim teams; Obie has a few things to sort through.
I enjoyed this book because Obie was trans. It was a decently well written book, but the main selling point for me was just that he’s trans; not how well the book was written. I found this book on my local library’s transgender book list for pride month. Overall I’d rate this book a 7.2/10. Obie Is Man Enough is a good read for anyone wanting to read about a trans tween who has more difficulties then just being out.
The author, Schulyer Bailar, has some awesome resources on his website at https://pinkmantaray.webflow.io/resources.

One Last Stop by Casey Mcquiston
For August, New York is freedom; but for Jane it’s prison. August meets Jane on the subway. Soon, the best part of her day is when their paths cross; and their paths always cross. Magical and sapphic, One Last Stop is a sweet read.
I read this book after I read (and reviewed) I Kissed Shara Wheeler; and realized I still had one more Casey Mcquiston book to read. I enjoyed the fun and charming elements to this book; but the pacing really messed with the excitement. Frankly, the book was too long. I’d rate One Last Stop a 7/10.
Casey Mcquiston is touring Europe to do research for their fourth book!

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate
When Rill and her siblings are taken by the cops from their small home on the Mississippi, and promised a visit to their parents, they are suspicious. When they are brought to the Tennessee Children’s Home Society, they slowly realize they will never see their parent’s again. With alternating chapters, Avery, in the present timeline, is determined to uncover her family history, and it isn’t as perfect as her family seems to be.
Based on the real life program run by Georgia Tann, Before We Were Yours is sad and educational. Georgia Tann took children out of their houses, off the side of the road, and took infants from mothers at the hospital; making millions of dollars illegally. I loved this book, and would rate it a 9/10. It was suspenseful, sweet, and perfectly glum.

As Far As You’ll Take Me by Phil Stamper
Marty needs a fresh start, and that means flying to London where he only knows his aunt and cousin. Of course, he immediately falls for a sweet, charming guy only minutes after arriving. Marty finds himself playing his Oboe in the public with a group of his cousin’s friends, does his finally fit in?
Spoiler Alert for this next paragraph.
This book was effortless to read. The story wasn’t too slow or too fast, and the characters were lovable. My favorite part of As Far As You’ll Take Me was that in the end Marty didn’t need to have a romantic relationship. He was able to forgive, but not befriend his first love, and move on happily with his new friends. I rate this book a 9.3/10.
